Moon Plains

Overview

Moon Plains is an extraordinary elevated grassland plateau above Nuwara Eliya that offers one of the most expansive and dramatic open-sky viewpoints in the Central Province. At approximately 2,000 metres above sea level, the plateau is characterised by vast rolling grasslands, rocky outcrops, small forest patches, and sweeping views in all directions across the highland landscape. The open, treeless quality of the Moon Plains gives the landscape a quality quite unlike the enclosed forest and tea estate scenery that dominates most of the Central Highlands — here the sky feels enormous and the horizon stretches in every direction, explaining the almost lunar quality that gave the place its name. The Plains are most atmospheric in the early morning when mist still clings to the lower valleys and the high grassland gleams in the first light, and again at sunset when the western sky fills with colour above the ridgeline. The relatively easy access from Nuwara Eliya and the absence of entry fees make it one of the most rewarding half-day excursions in the area.
