Overview
Ritigala is one of the most extraordinary and least-visited sites in Sri Lanka — a jungle-clad mountain rising to 766 metres from the surrounding Rajarata plains, combining a remarkable forest monastery archaeological complex with a nature reserve of exceptional ecological richness. The Ritigala forest monastery dates to approximately the 1st century BCE and was built by a sect of austere forest monks (Pamsukulika) who rejected the wealth and ceremony of city monasteries in favour of complete forest seclusion. The ruins — concealed within dense jungle and connected by ancient paved walkways of dressed stone — reveal a sophisticated monastic architecture unlike anything else in Sri Lanka, designed specifically for solitary meditation rather than communal ritual. The double-platform meditation structures, the paved walking meditation paths (a unique feature of this sect), and the forest pools create an atmosphere of profound antiquity and natural-spiritual synthesis.
