Kottawa Rainforest Reserve

Overview

Kottawa Rainforest Reserve is one of the last remaining fragments of the lowland tropical wet evergreen forest that once covered much of Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast. Located approximately 12 kilometres north of Galle, the reserve covers a relatively small area but supports a disproportionately rich biodiversity — over 80 bird species have been recorded, including many endemic species, and the forest harbours endemic reptiles, amphibians, and a remarkable diversity of tree species. The reserve is managed by the Forest Department and a well-maintained walking trail system allows exploration of the interior without disturbing the most sensitive ecological areas. The forest at Kottawa feels genuinely ancient — the large trees, the dense understorey, the epiphytes draping every branch, and the constant biological activity create an atmosphere of deep tropical richness. A guide from the reserve entrance significantly enhances the experience by identifying the endemic species that would otherwise be invisible to the untrained eye.
