Overview
The deep waters off Mirissa form one of the world’s most reliable locations for encountering blue whales — the largest animals ever to have existed on Earth — along with sperm whales, Bryde’s whales, and multiple dolphin species. The whale watching industry at Mirissa has grown significantly since the early 2000s, and dozens of vessels now operate daily departures during the season, typically setting out between 6am and 8am to reach the whale grounds 15–25 kilometres offshore. Blue whales surface to breathe every 10–15 minutes, and encounters typically involve the animals swimming alongside or near the boat, breathing their extraordinary blow, and occasionally fluking before deep dives. The experience of seeing a 25-metre blue whale at close range in the open ocean is described universally as one of the most profound wildlife encounters on the planet. Spinner and bottlenose dolphins frequently accompany whale watching boats and perform extraordinary aerial acrobatics.
