Somawathiya Chaitya National Park

Overview

Somawathiya Chaitya National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most unusual protected areas — combining an ancient and deeply sacred Buddhist stupa (the Somawathiya Chaitya, believed to enshrine a tooth relic of the Buddha) with a wildlife sanctuary along the Mahaweli River in the northeastern sector of the North Central Province. The combination of pilgrimage destination and wildlife park creates a uniquely layered experience: white-clad pilgrims circumambulating the ancient stupa while elephants graze the river bank opposite, and the sounds of religious chanting mixing with birdsong. The Mahaweli River section of the park is home to mugger crocodiles, water monitors, and an exceptional diversity of waterbirds, and the combination of cultural heritage and natural wildlife makes Somawathiya unlike any other site in Sri Lanka.
