Overview
Thalangama Wetlands form part of the broader Kotte wetland complex east of Colombo — a network of natural marsh, grassland, and water body habitats that together constitute one of the most important urban biodiversity corridors in Sri Lanka. The Thalangama area is less formally managed than Beddagana but equally productive for birdwatching, with the open grassland and paddy margin habitats attracting different species from the reed beds of the adjacent parks. The wetland provides habitat for spot-billed pelicans, purple herons, yellow bitterns, and a rich variety of smaller species, and the informal character of the area means that birdwatching here has a quality of personal discovery that the more managed parks cannot replicate.
