Overview
Pomparippu is one of the most archaeologically significant prehistoric burial sites in Sri Lanka — a large megalithic burial field near the coast of the Puttalam District, dated to approximately 1000–600 BCE, containing hundreds of burial urns and megalithic structures that provide evidence of the non-Aryan prehistoric people who inhabited Sri Lanka before the arrival of the Indo-Aryan settlers who founded the historical Anuradhapura civilisation. The site is believed to be associated with the ancient Megalithic culture of South India, reflecting the prehistoric cultural connections across the Palk Strait. Pomparippu is a UNESCO-listed site of international significance, yet receives virtually no visitors — making it one of the most historically important and least-known archaeological destinations in Sri Lanka.
