Overview
The Parakrama Samudra — the Sea of Parakrama — is one of the great hydraulic engineering achievements of the ancient world, a vast reservoir created by King Parakramabahu I (1153–1186 CE) by connecting and expanding existing tanks to form a continuous body of water covering approximately 2,500 hectares. Parakramabahu’s famous declaration — that not a single drop of rain should reach the sea without first serving the people — is embodied in this extraordinary reservoir that transformed the dry zone agricultural productivity of the Polonnaruwa region. The lake stretches for nearly 16 kilometres along the western edge of the ancient city, providing the backdrop against which the monuments of Polonnaruwa are set — the white stupas visible across the water, and the stone of Parakramabahu’s vision containing the reflections of his monuments. The bund is a pleasant walk and cycle, and the waterbird populations at the margins are exceptional.
