Vatadage Sacred Tooth Relic House

Overview

The Vatadage is one of the most elegant and complete ancient Buddhist structures in Sri Lanka — a circular relic house built to enshrine a sacred tooth relic of the Buddha, representing the pinnacle of the Polonnaruwa-era circular relic house architectural form. Constructed in the 12th century CE, the Vatadage consists of concentric circular stone platforms approached through four ornamental entrances, each guarded by beautifully carved moonstone thresholds and flanked by guardian figures (dvarapalas) of exceptional quality. At the centre of the upper platform, four seated Buddha figures face the four cardinal directions in a perfectly symmetrical arrangement around the central relic chamber. The moonstones of the Vatadage are the finest surviving examples of the form — their carved bands of geese, elephants, horses, lions, dwarfs, and flame scrolls carved with extraordinary precision and still largely intact after 800 years.
