Overview
The Polhena Coral Reef is the primary natural feature of Polhena Bay near Matara — a shallow, accessible coral reef system that begins within metres of the shoreline and extends offshore through a variety of coral types and fish communities. The reef is an important habitat for sea turtles, reef fish, and in the clearer months, small sharks and rays. The shallow water (1–3 metres over much of the inner reef) makes it accessible to snorkellers of all experience levels and even confident swimmers, and the diversity of marine life packed into this modest area is extraordinary. Dedicated divers can reach deeper sections of the reef where larger marine species and more complex coral structures are found. The reef is one of the healthiest remaining coral communities on the southern coast — a testament to the relatively calm conditions in the protected bay.
