Overview
Mirissa Beach is one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated coastal destinations — a crescent bay of golden sand enclosed between two rocky headlands approximately 40 kilometres east of Galle, famous throughout the world for the extraordinary wildlife spectacle that takes place just a few kilometres offshore between November and April each year. Blue whales — Earth’s largest living creatures — surface to breathe in the deep offshore waters beyond Mirissa, and whale watching boats depart daily in season for what is regularly described as one of the finest whale watching experiences in the world. The beach itself is equally appealing — a gentle arc of sand with excellent swimming in season, a vibrant selection of restaurants and bars along the beach road, a growing surf scene on the eastern section, and the iconic Coconut Tree Hill providing a ready-made photography viewpoint above the bay.
