Puttalam Lagoon

Overview

Puttalam Lagoon is a vast coastal lagoon in the North Western Province — one of the largest lagoons in Sri Lanka, covering approximately 16,000 hectares of shallow, brackish water enclosed between the mainland and the Kalpitiya Peninsula. The lagoon is the productive heart of the region’s fishing economy, supporting hundreds of fishing families who harvest its rich marine life using traditional methods. The waters teem with prawns, crabs, mullet, and other species, and the lagoon margins host substantial populations of waterbirds including flamingos (seasonally), painted storks, herons, and numerous wader species. Boat trips through the lagoon reveal an extraordinary landscape of still water, mangrove islands, and the wide sky of the northwestern coast — an experience of scale and natural calm that is unlike anything available on Sri Lanka’s more tourist-developed coastlines.
