Rajanganaya Reservoir Area

Overview

Rajanganaya Reservoir is a large modern tank in the northern Anuradhapura District, built on the foundations of ancient irrigation works that were part of the Rajarata hydraulic civilisation. The reservoir covers a vast area of water surrounded by dry zone scrub and paddy land, providing an important habitat for waterbirds and a resource for the agricultural communities that depend on it. The tank margins — particularly in the early morning when mist rises from the water and birds gather at the edges — offer birdwatching of considerable quality, with painted storks, pelicans, herons, and numerous wader species regularly present. The reservoir road, following the bund for several kilometres, provides a scenic elevated perspective over the water and surrounding dry zone landscape that is typical of the North Central Province’s distinctive visual character.
