Overview
Riverston Peak is one of the most rewarding and spectacular viewpoints in the entire Central Province, rising to approximately 1,359 metres and commanding a 360-degree panorama across an extraordinary landscape — the Dumbara Valley directly below, the Knuckles Range extending to the east and northeast, the Central Highlands massif to the south, and the lowland plains of the North Central Province stretching to the horizon in the north. The peak is accessed via the scenic Riverston road from Matale, which passes through one of Sri Lanka’s most dramatic transitions of landscape — from the dry zone scrub of the north, through the mid-elevation forest and grassland, to the misty highland of the Riverston ridge. The road to Riverston is itself famous as one of the most scenic drives in Sri Lanka, winding through villages, jungle patches, and a series of successive viewpoints that build in drama as you climb. The final approach to the peak offers the miniature “World’s End” escarpment that makes Riverston unique.
