Overview
Ravana Falls is one of the most visited and easily accessible waterfalls in Sri Lanka, located directly on the main Ella–Wellawaya highway approximately 5 kilometres below Ella town. The falls cascade down a broad rock face in a wide, multi-channelled sheet of white water that drops approximately 25 metres into a pool below, framed by the dense jungle and rock formations of the Uva Province hill country. The waterfall takes its name from the demon king Ravana of the Ramayana epic, who in local Sri Lankan tradition is said to have hidden Seetha in a cave behind the falls during her captivity. The legend connects Ravana Falls to the broader Ramayana Trail that runs through the Uva Province highlands. The falls are impressive year-round but at their most dramatic in the monsoon months when the full volume of the Uva Province rainfall turns the cascade into a thunderous curtain of water. Swimming is possible in the pool during the drier months.
