Overview
Gadaladeniya Rajamaha Viharaya is a magnificent 14th-century Buddhist temple located approximately 15 kilometres west of Kandy, built in 1344 CE by King Bhuvanekabahu IV in the South Indian architectural style — a remarkable stylistic choice that reflects the extensive South Indian cultural influence on medieval Sri Lanka. The temple is constructed entirely of stone and features a distinctive South Indian-style stone gopuram (entrance tower) that is unique among Sri Lanka’s Buddhist temples. The main shrine room, set within a large natural stone outcrop, contains an impressive seated Buddha statue carved from the rock with beautiful stone filigree screens and carved pillars surrounding it. The temple also features a moonstone — a decorative stone carving at the entrance — of exceptional craftsmanship. The setting is remarkably peaceful, surrounded by rice paddies and the agricultural landscape of the Dumbara Valley, and the temple receives far fewer visitors than the better-known Kandy city sites, giving it an atmosphere of contemplative solitude.
