Dodanduwa Fishing Village

Overview

Dodanduwa is a traditional fishing village between Hikkaduwa and Galle whose community maintains the stilt fishing tradition and the outrigger boat culture that characterises the southwest coastal fishing communities. The village beach, the fish market, and the daily rhythms of the fishing community create a cultural landscape that contrasts sharply with the resort development of nearby Hikkaduwa. Dodanduwa also has a small lake system behind the village that provides pleasant birdwatching and an additional ecological dimension to the coastal community. The village has been relatively unaffected by tourist development and retains an authentic character.
