Handunugoda Tea Estate

Overview

Handunugoda Tea Estate near Ahangama is one of the most remarkable and unusual tea estates in Sri Lanka — not only a working tea producer but also the creator of one of the world’s most extraordinary luxury teas: Virgin White Tea, produced from hand-plucked bud tips gathered by female workers who are required to wear gloves to prevent skin contact with the leaves. The estate is privately owned and offers guided tours that are more personalised and narratively rich than the corporate factory tours of the Nuwara Eliya highlands — walking through the tea gardens, learning about the different grades produced, visiting the processing facility, and ending with a cupping session that includes the extraordinary White Tea alongside regular estate teas. The estate’s owner, Herman Gunaratne, is a celebrated figure in Sri Lankan tea culture and has written extensively about the industry. The garden setting overlooking the southern coast is beautiful.
