Overview
The hot springs near Wellawaya in the Monaragala District are a geological curiosity in the transition zone between the Uva highlands and the dry zone lowlands — naturally heated water emerging from the ground at temperatures warm enough for bathing, caused by the geothermal activity in the rock formations of the southeastern province. The springs are modest in scale and relatively unknown — there is no developed spa infrastructure, no commercial bathing facility — just the natural hot water emerging in a rural setting that locals have used for bathing and treating skin conditions for generations. The combination of the natural hot spring with the surrounding dry zone landscape and the complete absence of any tourist development gives the springs a raw, authentic character that more famous hot springs in the world have entirely lost.
