Overview

Kumana National Park — historically called Yala East — is the less-visited eastern extension of the Yala protected area complex, located on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka in the Ampara District near the Monaragala border. Covering approximately 35,664 hectares, Kumana is internationally renowned for its extraordinary waterbird concentrations — particularly the Kumana Villu, a tidal inlet lagoon that becomes a nesting colony of spectacular scale between May and July, when thousands of painted storks, open-billed storks, night herons, little cormorants, purple herons, and spoonbills nest simultaneously in the trees above the water. Outside the nesting season, the park is a rich wildlife sanctuary with elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and crocodiles in genuinely wild and largely uncrowded conditions. Kumana receives a fraction of the visitor numbers of its western neighbour Yala National Park (Block 1), making every wildlife encounter here feel private and unhurried.
