Overview
Beddagana Wetland Park is a designated urban wildlife sanctuary located in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, within the greater Colombo metropolitan area. Covering approximately 17 hectares of marsh and open water, the park was officially established by the Urban Development Authority as a model for urban biodiversity conservation. It features a well-constructed circular walkway that winds through reed beds, open water, and scrub vegetation, providing excellent observation points for waterbirds and other wetland wildlife. Purple herons, black-crowned night herons, little cormorants, Indian pond herons, and various species of kingfisher are commonly observed. The park is also home to water monitors (kabaragoya), estuarine crocodiles, and a variety of freshwater fish. As one of the few officially protected wetland parks within Colombo’s urban boundary, Beddagana plays a vital educational role in introducing city residents — particularly children — to the natural ecosystems that exist at their doorstep.
