Overview
The Bentota River Safari is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular and rewarding natural experiences, taking visitors by motorised boat deep into the mangrove canal networks and tributaries of the Bentota River estuary. The river winds through a rich mosaic of mangrove forest, flooded paddy fields, Buddhist island temples, and traditional fishing communities before reaching the open lagoon at the coast. Boat trips typically last between one and three hours and reveal an extraordinary diversity of wildlife — monitor lizards basking on muddy banks, large fishing spiders suspended in webs between mangrove roots, estuarine crocodiles resting on sunny logs, and dozens of bird species including kingfishers, cormorants, herons, and the prehistoric-looking Sri Lanka grey hornbill. The Cinnamon Island stop, where a small family demonstrates traditional cinnamon peeling and processing, adds a fascinating cultural dimension to what is already a richly textured natural experience.
