Overview

Weligama Bay is a wide, gently curving bay approximately 5 kilometres in length, forming one of the most spacious and visually appealing coastal landscapes on the Southern Province shoreline. The bay is famous among surfers as an excellent beginner surf destination — the gentle beach break and relatively forgiving waves make it one of the best places in Sri Lanka for a first surf lesson, and dozens of surf schools operate from the beach. The town of Weligama stretches along the bay’s inner edge and provides a lively backdrop of fishing activity, market life, and the traditional southern Sri Lankan coastal culture that the more resort-developed beaches have largely abandoned. The bay’s defining visual feature from above is its sheer scale — looking down from the hills behind the town, the entire arc of sand and water creates a composition of remarkable grandeur.
