Overview
The collective wetland birdwatching resources of the Northern Province — encompassing the Iranamadu Tank, Akkarayankulam, Thandikulam, the Elephant Pass lagoon, and numerous smaller tanks and seasonal water bodies — represent one of the most underexplored birding destinations in Sri Lanka. The combination of the recovering post-conflict ecology and the importance of the northern coast wetlands as a staging point for migratory birds from Eurasia and Central Asia creates a birdwatching landscape of exceptional potential. The wetland network in the north forms part of the South Asian Flyway and its position between the Vankalai flamingo zone and the tank systems of the North Central Province creates cumulative diversity that specialist birders are only beginning to explore.
