Gregory Lake

Overview

Gregory Lake is the centrepiece of Nuwara Eliya’s scenic landscape — a large, still body of water sitting at the heart of the town at an elevation of nearly 1,900 metres, surrounded by manicured green lawns, rolling hills, and the gentle architecture of Nuwara Eliya’s colonial-era buildings. Created in 1873 by colonial Governor Sir William Henry Gregory — after whom it was named — the lake was originally constructed as a recreational water feature for the colonial community that had made Nuwara Eliya their preferred highland retreat. Today it remains the social and recreational heart of the town, with pedal boats, paddle boards, and horse riding available along its banks. The lakeside promenade is lined with cafes, gardens, and viewpoints, and the reflections of the surrounding hills and sky on the water’s surface create a landscape of considerable beauty, particularly in the early morning when mist hangs low and the surface is perfectly calm.
