Buduruwagala Rock Temple

Overview

Buduruwagala is one of the most remarkable and least-visited rock-carved Buddhist heritage sites in Sri Lanka — a series of seven monumental rock-cut figures carved into a granite cliff face in the jungle near Wellawaya in the Monaragala District, dating to approximately the 9th century CE and representing the zenith of Mahayana Buddhist sculptural art in Sri Lanka. The central figure is a standing Buddha of approximately 15 metres — one of the largest ancient rock-carved Buddha figures in the island — accompanied by flanking Bodhisattva figures, including a rare image of Tara (the female Bodhisattva), one of the finest ancient representations of this deity in South Asia. The carvings retain traces of their original orange-red paint and lacquer, and the figures stand in a forest clearing that creates a quality of filtered jungle light remarkably sympathetic to the ancient stone.
