Overview
The Urubokka River Valley in the hinterland of Matara District is a beautiful rural landscape of river gorges, paddy terraces, rubber plantations, and forested ridges that represents the interior of the Southern Province largely unknown to the beach-focused tourist. The river and its tributaries drain the highlands above Matara, passing through a succession of rural villages and agricultural landscapes before emerging at the coastal plains. The valley is productive birdwatching territory — the riverine forest, forest patches, and agricultural mosaic support a diverse community of birds including several endemics. Traditional village life in the valley is closely tied to the river — fishing, paddy cultivation, and the annual flood cycle — and a drive or tuk-tuk exploration of the back roads through the valley reveals a Sri Lankan rural landscape of genuine beauty and authenticity.
