Overview
Sembuwatta Lake is a serene highland lake set within a green bowl of hills and tea estates near Elkaduwa in the Matale District, created by a small dam across a mountain stream and surrounded by a landscape of exceptional quiet beauty. The lake sits at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level and its still waters reflect the surrounding green hills and sky with mirror-like precision, creating a peaceful scene of the kind that is increasingly rare in Sri Lanka’s increasingly accessible highlands. The lake is reached via a winding road through tea and cardamom estates, and the approach — with progressively improving highland views — is itself a pleasure. A small resort and some basic facilities have been developed at the lakeside, making it a comfortable half-day excursion destination. The surrounding hills offer short walking trails, and the lake itself can be explored by hired pedalo or rowing boat. Sembuwatta is one of those hidden gems of the Central Province that rewards visitors who venture off the standard Kandy–Nuwara Eliya tourist circuit.
