Overview
Gal Oya National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most remote, least-visited, and most rewarding national parks — a vast wilderness of 25,900 hectares centred around the Senanayake Samudraya, the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka, surrounded by dry zone forest, rocky outcrops, and coastal fringe habitats that together support an exceptional concentration of wildlife. Gal Oya is perhaps best known for its extraordinary boat safaris on the reservoir — the only place in Sri Lanka where elephant herds wade into the water and swim between the forest islands of the reservoir, creating one of the most spectacular and unusual wildlife encounters in Asia. The park is also exceptional for its large predator populations — leopards are regularly sighted in genuinely wild conditions — and its genuine isolation means that safari jeeps are rare and the wildlife behaves with a naturalness difficult to find in more heavily visited parks.
