Overview
Nilgala Forest Reserve is a protected dry zone forest in the Monaragala District, forming part of the buffer zone between the cultivated lowlands of the Uva Province and the remote southeastern wilderness that extends toward Gal Oya and the eastern coast. The forest is a critical wildlife corridor for the elephant herds that move between Gal Oya, Lahugala, and the eastern national parks, and it also supports leopards, sambar deer, spotted deer, and a rich community of dry zone birds including several endemic species. The reserve is entirely off the tourist circuit and is known primarily to wildlife researchers and local hunters — which means visiting it requires considerable self-sufficiency and local knowledge, but rewards the effort with a genuinely wild forest experience far from any other visitors.
