Overview
Unawatuna Beach is one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated and frequently photographed coastal destinations — a horseshoe-shaped bay of golden sand and turquoise water approximately 6 kilometres south of Galle, protected from the open ocean by a coral reef and rocky headlands that create reliably calm swimming conditions for most of the year. The beach has been drawing visitors since the 1970s when it was regularly cited in global travel lists as one of the world’s most beautiful bays, and while development has brought considerable beach infrastructure, the fundamental qualities of the place — the arc of perfect sand, the clear water, the gentle palms above the shoreline, and the stunning view of the bay from the surrounding hills — remain as compelling as ever. The reef offshore provides reasonable snorkelling and several diving schools operate from the beach. The beach road behind the sand offers a dense selection of restaurants, beach bars, guesthouses, and dive shops catering to an international mix of tourists.
