Koggala Lake

Overview

Koggala Lake is a large coastal lagoon lake located approximately 15 kilometres east of Galle along the southern coast highway, covering an area of about 2.5 square kilometres and encompassing 10 islands of various sizes within its calm, shallow waters. The lake is a significant natural habitat for waterbirds and supports traditional fishing communities who have fished its waters with small canoes and fixed nets for generations. Boat safaris from the lakeside reveal a beautiful environment of clear water, mangrove-fringed islands, and a rich diversity of birds — grey herons, purple herons, little cormorants, kingfishers, and multiple egret species are commonly sighted. Several of the larger islands contain Buddhist temples and cinnamon plantations that are visited as part of the boat tour. The adjacent Koggala Beach is a long, wide stretch of sand directly on the Indian Ocean, providing a dramatic contrast to the calm inland lake just metres away.
