Birdwatching Lakes Inside Wilpattu

June 14, 2026 claymatics.web@gmail.com Puttalam Wilpattu

Overview

The 31 villus and associated water bodies within Wilpattu National Park collectively form one of the finest avian habitats in Sri Lanka — a system of freshwater lakes, shallow margins, and adjacent forest that supports an exceptional diversity of resident and migratory birds. Wilpattu’s bird list exceeds 215 species, and the villu edges concentrate waterbirds in conditions that allow close, unhurried observation. The combination of open water, marginal vegetation, and fringing forest creates multiple habitat layers attractive to different bird groups: pelicans and storks in the open water, herons and egrets at the margins, kingfishers and bee-eaters in the streamside vegetation, and endemic forest birds in the adjacent jungle. A Wilpattu safari with a birding focus can produce extraordinary species counts in conditions of remarkable wildness.
