Overview
Kudiramalai Point — “Horse Head Point” — is a rocky headland on the northwestern coast within the boundary of Wilpattu National Park that holds both natural and archaeological significance. The point is one of the oldest documented ancient ports in Sri Lanka, with Chinese, Arab, and Indian sources from the 1st millennium CE referencing a trading settlement here. Archaeological surveys have identified ancient artefacts, coins, and structural remains suggesting a pre-Christian trading site. The headland itself — a dramatic rocky promontory where the Indian Ocean meets the northwestern coast in a scene of genuine elemental power — is one of the most remote coastal locations accessible from the park. Wildlife including sea turtles and various seabirds uses the rocky coastline, and the panoramic ocean view from the point is exceptional.
