Overview

Pahiyangala Cave is a magnificent limestone cave and Buddhist temple site in the Kalutara District, one of the largest natural caves in South Asia and arguably the most dramatic cave experience in Sri Lanka’s western region. The cave is a gigantic natural cavern rising approximately 40 metres at its highest internal point, with a broad entrance that admits dramatic shafts of natural light. Archaeological excavations within the cave have dated continuous human occupation to over 12,000 years ago, revealing a prehistoric heritage that complements its long Buddhist history. According to Sri Lankan chronicles, the cave has been used as a place of Buddhist worship and meditation since at least the 1st century BCE. A resident monk community still occupies the cave and surrounding temple complex, maintaining a tradition of monastic habitation that stretches across millennia. The scale, grandeur, and deep human history of Pahiyangala make it one of the most remarkable sites in all of Sri Lanka.
