Overview
Rankoth Vehera is the largest stupa in the Polonnaruwa ancient city and the fourth largest in Sri Lanka, a massive brick dagoba rising to approximately 55 metres that was built by King Nissankamalla in the late 12th century CE. Unlike the even greater stupas of Anuradhapura, Rankoth Vehera’s scale is comprehensible in a single visual field — it rises dramatically above the surrounding scrub and trees of the northern archaeological zone, its golden-coloured brick giving it a distinctive appearance compared to the whitewashed monuments of the Sacred City. The stupa is fully circumambulable at ground level on a broad platform, and the four entrance shrines at the cardinal points retain sculptures and carvings of considerable quality. As the dominant architectural mass in the northern section of Polonnaruwa, Rankoth Vehera provides visual anchoring for the entire archaeological circuit.
