Overview
Thuparama Image House in Polonnaruwa is one of the best-preserved ancient gedige (image house) structures in Sri Lanka — a brick building with a barrel-vaulted corbelled roof that remains largely intact after 900+ years, providing a rare experience of entering an ancient enclosed shrine space whose original architectural envelope is still complete. The building dates to the 11th–12th century CE and originally housed a large standing Buddha image (now damaged). The corbelled brick roof — built without keystones by placing each brick layer slightly inward until the two sides met — is a technical achievement as impressive as it is visually striking, and the quality of the brickwork throughout reflects the extraordinary masonry skill of Polonnaruwa-era builders. Standing inside the dark interior and looking up at the surviving ancient roof creates a powerful spatial experience unique in the entire Polonnaruwa complex.
