Overview
Lankatilaka Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the most dramatic and architecturally impressive Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, built in 1344 CE by King Bhuvanekabahu IV on a granite rock outcrop that rises steeply from the surrounding paddy fields of the Dumbara Valley, about 14 kilometres west of Kandy. The temple’s name translates as “ornament of Lanka” — an apt description for a building of such grandeur and refinement. The main shrine stands five storeys tall and contains a massive standing Buddha figure of exceptional proportions, its upper portions partially ruined by centuries of conflict and neglect, which paradoxically adds to its haunting atmosphere. The stone-carved walls, pillar inscriptions recording the temple’s construction and patronage, and the approach through stone-carved entrance gateways all reflect the sophisticated artistic culture of 14th-century Sri Lanka. The view from the temple terrace across the rice paddies, river plains, and mountains of the Dumbara Valley is one of the finest rural panoramas accessible from the Kandy area.
