St. Clair’s Falls (Upper Access Routes)

Overview

St. Clair’s Falls — often called the Niagara of Sri Lanka — is one of the most spectacular and widely photographed waterfalls in the island, dropping in two magnificent tiers through the Talawakele tea estate landscape in the Central Highlands. The falls have a total drop of approximately 80 metres across the two stages, and the sheer volume of the cascade during the wet season creates a thunderous roar audible from considerable distance. The classic viewpoint is from the road below, but lesser-known upper access routes through the Tata Global Beverages tea estate allow visitors to approach the falls from above and behind, revealing entirely different perspectives of the landscape and the falls. These upper routes require permission from the estate management but provide photography opportunities unavailable from the standard viewpoint — including views looking down the fall’s full face and across the tea estate towards the distant highlands.
