Wilpattu National Park

Overview

Wilpattu National Park is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and one of the most biodiverse wildlife sanctuaries in Asia — a 1,317 square kilometre wilderness of dense dry zone jungle, natural lakes (villus), river courses, and coastal scrub in the North Western Province. Wilpattu is perhaps most celebrated for its exceptional leopard population — the natural villus (basin-shaped lakes formed from former ocean lagoons) create ideal hunting and drinking sites where the cats are reliably encountered by patient safari visitors. Closed for 23 years during the civil conflict and reopened in 2010, the park has recovered to a state of remarkable wildness — elephant herds, sloth bears, water buffaloes, sambar deer, spotted deer, mugger crocodiles, and over 215 bird species coexist in a landscape that feels genuinely untouched. The combination of natural villus and dry zone jungle makes Wilpattu one of the most visually distinctive national parks in South Asia.
