Udawattakele Forest Reserve

Overview

Udawattakele is a remarkable 104-hectare protected forest reserve sitting immediately above Kandy city — a dense, largely undisturbed montane rainforest that begins just a few minutes’ walk from the Temple of the Tooth Relic and feels utterly removed from the city below. The reserve has been protected since the Kandyan royal era, when it served as the forbidden forest of the royal palace — access for commoners was prohibited under pain of death. This centuries-long protection has allowed Udawattakele to develop into a genuinely rich urban woodland, harbouring 67 species of trees, 68 species of birds, and a variety of mammals including toque macaques, giant squirrels, and porcupines. Two meditation hermitages built into the forest provide an atmosphere of ancient calm. Walking trails wind through the reserve’s interior, past a lake, and up to viewpoints that offer sweeping panoramas across Kandy city and the surrounding hills. The birdsong, the humidity-laden air, and the quality of light filtering through the canopy create a forest experience of exceptional atmosphere.
