Overview
Baker’s Falls is a beautiful cascade within Horton Plains National Park, visited as part of the park’s famous 9-kilometre circular walking trail. The falls are named after Sir Samuel Baker, the 19th-century British explorer who visited and documented much of Sri Lanka’s highland interior. The waterfall drops approximately 20 metres through a narrow highland gorge in the Belihul Oya stream, framed by the cloud forest vegetation of the park — mossy rocks, ferns, and highland shrubs creating a lush natural framing. The falls are encountered on the return leg of the circular trail after visiting World’s End, and the sound of the cascade after hours of walking the silent plateau is an extraordinarily welcome sensory reward. A wooden viewing platform provides a safe and photogenic vantage point. Although Baker’s Falls is inevitably secondary to World’s End as an attraction within the park, it has a beauty and tranquillity all its own and provides the most intimate nature experience the park offers.
