Overview
The Beruwala Lighthouse is a tall, distinctive colonial-era lighthouse standing on a rocky promontory at the southern end of Beruwala Bay, guiding ships into the coastline along what has been a commercially important stretch of ocean since the era of Arab and Portuguese trade. The lighthouse is an elegant structure of painted masonry rising above the surrounding vegetation and rocks, and its elevated position provides exceptional views along the coast in both directions — north toward Kalutara and south toward Bentota. The surrounding headland is a scenic walk from the beach, passing through fishing community lanes and rocky coastal paths before arriving at the lighthouse base. While the interior of the lighthouse is not generally open to the public, the approach, the coastal views, and the photographic opportunities offered by the lighthouse’s dramatic setting make it well worth visiting as part of a broader Beruwala exploration. It is particularly beautiful at sunset when the warm light catches the white-painted tower.
