Overview
Kalpitiya Peninsula is a long, narrow finger of land extending northward into the Indian Ocean, forming the western boundary of Puttalam Lagoon and providing the western coast’s finest concentration of kite surfing, dolphin watching, and unspoiled beach experiences. The peninsula is perhaps best known internationally as Sri Lanka’s premier kite surfing destination — consistent winds from May to October drive some of the finest conditions in Asia, and a growing community of kite surfing schools and resorts has established itself along the western shore. But beyond the wind sports, Kalpitiya offers pristine beaches, spectacular dolphin watching (pods of hundreds of spinner dolphins are regularly encountered just offshore), proximity to Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary, and the remote, unhurried character of a destination that feels genuinely far from the Sri Lanka of the tourist brochures.
