Overview
Hakgala Botanical Garden is a spectacular montane garden established in 1861 at 1,745 metres above sea level in the Hakgala Forest Reserve below the dramatic Hakgala Rock, about 10 kilometres southeast of Nuwara Eliya. Originally created as a quinine plantation to combat the malaria epidemic afflicting plantation workers, the garden was transformed into a diverse botanical collection by the colonial botanical establishment and now covers 27 hectares of extraordinarily varied plant collections. The temperate and montane climate at this elevation allows Hakgala to grow plant species from around the world’s cool highlands — European roses, Japanese cherry trees, rhododendrons, Himalayan plants, and Australian trees grow alongside Sri Lankan endemic species in a remarkable horticultural diversity. The rose garden, containing hundreds of species in bloom from January to April, is justifiably the garden’s most famous feature. The background of the towering Hakgala Rock cliff face above the garden creates one of the most dramatic botanical settings in Asia.
