Overview

The Knuckles Mountain Range — named for the distinctive knuckle-like profile of its five peaks visible from the Kandy plain — is one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary natural landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site of global biological significance. Officially designated the Knuckles Conservation Forest, the range encompasses 155 square kilometres of highly diverse tropical and montane forest, ranging from tropical dry mixed evergreen forest in the lower valleys to montane cloud forest at the highest elevations. This remarkable range of forest types in a compact area supports an exceptional biodiversity — 34 endemic animal species, 183 bird species, and an extraordinary plant diversity including numerous endemic orchid species. The terrain is dramatic and varied — deep river gorges, open grassland plateaus, dense forest ridges, and traditional villages accessing communities that have lived within the forest for generations. Multi-day trekking through the Knuckles is among the finest wilderness experiences available in Sri Lanka.
