Overview
Kalutara Beach is a wide, windswept stretch of Indian Ocean coastline flanking the town of Kalutara where the Kalu Ganga river creates a natural estuary before flowing into the sea. The beach extends for several kilometres and offers an energetic, largely local beach experience quite different in character from the resort beaches of the far south. The oceanfront here is dramatic — wide open sky, rolling surf, and the sight and sound of the sea at its most elemental. While the current can be strong and makes swimming inadvisable in some sections, the beach is ideal for long walks, kite flying, and watching the extraordinary sunsets that illuminate the river estuary and the silhouette of the Kalutara Bodhiya. A string of small guesthouses and local restaurants lines the beach road, catering primarily to Sri Lankan domestic tourists who come from Colombo for weekend breaks. The beach has a raw, unselfconscious energy that makes it refreshingly different from the packaged beach experiences of the south coast resorts.
